Fjellstrand Offshore Wind Farm Service & Rescue Vessel – WSRV 35

Fjellstrand has in cooperation with Offshore Windservice ApS developed a specialised vessel for the offshore wind farm service market. Given the challenging wave conditions in offshore wind farms, the strict design parameters have resulted in a vessel with greatly improved operability and manoeuvrability characteristics. In combination with a practical and safe layout, this will minimise the risks involved in transferring service personnel to and from the wind turbines in large waves.

Based on an innovative hull form, the vessel comprises a stabilised monohull (trimaran) with relatively low water plane area and large inherent damping, thus bringing together the best from three hull concepts; the familiarity and capacity of a long monohull, the stability, deck area and speed of a catamaran, and the comfort, low accelerations and high operability of a SWATH (Small Waterplane Area Twin Hull). The hull gives significant reduction of roll and pitch motion compared to traditional trimarans, catamarans and monohulls, both at transit and during low speed service operation.

Two high-speed diesel engines empower: two controllable pitch propellers (CPP), two retractable tunnel thrusters at the stern, and one powerful tunnel thruster at the bow. A transit navigational draught of only 1.5 metres ensures operability in the most shallow wind farms, whereas a service draught of 2.7 metres provides excellent manoeuvrability and propeller thrust in large wave conditions.

The vessel has a total length of 35 metres, takes 24 passengers, 4 crew members and has 4 fully equipped cabins including one sick bay. The vessel size and layout can however be tailor made to suit the client’s requirements.

A rescue (daughter) craft of up to 10.6 m can be housed within the “mother vessel” and deployed from its internal slipway in rough conditions. This rescue craft can also be used as a second service vessel, bringing personnel to and from nearby wind turbines in relatively calm weather, thus increasing the efficiency of the service work or giving possibilities of operation in very shallow water. Additionally it can be used for safe transport of personnel between vessels in rough weather.
